On Mattresses
Buying a mattress is a small investment for a middle class family there are various factors to choose from including size, budget and necessity. But there are also mattress specific factors to keep in mind, while choosing a mattress make sure that it checks the following boxes, because these are the difference between a good night’s sleep and a nightmare.
Comfort: Mattresses should obviously offer great comfort to the body as they have improved in design and features over the years. One of the best mattresses available in the market nowadays are memory foam, it fits you like a glove and the gives you the perfect night’s sleep designed specifically for your body.
Support: Support is an essential feature of buying a mattress; make sure that your mattress gives you good lumbar support, along with shoulder and hip support as you sleep.
Temperature Neutrality: This is one of those features that most people aren’t aware of, but a good mattress will have large spaces between its cells, which will allow more breathability at night, thus keeping the temperature neutral.
Durability: This is of course an important feature in a mattress, although do make sure to change your mattress if it becomes too old or shabby or if the springs don’t work as they used to or in case of coir, if the coir threads start coming out.
The Sleepers and their mattresses
Another important feature of buying a mattress is buying one that is perfect for how you sleep.
Side sleepers: Side sleepers should ensure that their spine, back and necks are properly aligned as they sleep. A soft to medium firm mattress is perfect for those who sleep on their sides.
Stomach sleepers: Stomach sleepers apply a lot of pressure on their lower back. An ideal mattress for a stomach sleeper will have fewer gaps between the body and the mattress. A memory foam mattress should be perfect here.
Back sleepers: The most ideal form to sleep in, the ideal firmness level should be medium to firm, depending upon how heavy the person is, if you are on the lighter side medium would do otherwise go for a mattress that is medium firm.

As we have mentioned comfort is relative—and the mattress that is comfortable for you may not be so for others. In fact, the kind of mattress can also depend on your health; Orthopaedic mattresses are made specifically to provide an incredible amount of support to the spine in case of people with chronic back problems. But memory foam is widely considered to be the most versatile of the mattresses.
Memory foam does have an edge over most mattresses especially the spring-based models. Spring-based models, although affordable, do tend to deteriorate quicker and provide much less support, while its springs can feel rigid after a while as opposed to the plush memory foam mattresses. The advantages of memory foam can seem even more pronounced in comparison, since the body’s shape is carved into the mattress and after repeated use, it tends to get better and better.
The value of your mattress will of course be directly proportional to the quality, the brand, and other important factors. A cheap memory foam mattress will not offer the same level of comfort as a high quality spring mattress and vice versa.
Pillow Talk
With all this talk of mattresses, we shouldn’t forget about pillows. A good mattress without good pillows is like buying an ornate and beautiful razor and fitting it with a cheap blade. Its necessity cannot be understated because your sleep will really suffer without them. We have talked about the aesthetic of pillows in a previous blog, so we will sans that here.
Pillows on average will last you a good 18 months, but you can use them for longer as most people do. If you do find yourself constantly having to fluff your pillow up, or having to fold it in half to get the right support, it's probably time to chuck it for a new one. However like mattresses they come in a variety of materials like, gel, foam, cotton, latex and so on.
All these types have their pros and cons, and your pillow type should be personalized for your needs. For a sturdier, firm feeling pillows latex are the way to go, they provide a lot of support and won’t squish down. Cotton pillows are soft and are made for the huggers to really get comfy during their pleasant snooze, Foam and gel are newer pillows and function much the same way as their mattress counterparts.
Mattresses and Pillows like everything in your house should be purchased with care and consideration, as there are different needs and different aesthetic options to consider as you purchase these things which will last you a long time.
